These ceramic house are made by ceramicist Michael Boulton using the Raku technique, a 16th century method of firing the pottery. The hot pottery is removed from the kiln and put into sawdust producing carbon which stains the unglazed areas of the piece. It also causes the glaze to crack and carbon forms within the cracks.
