Maria Sigma

£2,680

One of a kind piece handwoven with two woollen warps and a natural undyed linen/jute/ cotton weft, in a plain weave creating a circular tube format which has been reversed inside-out and horizontally-vertically.

Inspired by the Greek landscape and exceptional trousseaux [ proikia ] pieces of Maria's heritage (hand-crocheted laces and hand-woven bed-coverings), with a passion for re-interpreting traditional craft techniques in a lively and contemporary way, this piece combines the Cycladic minimalism with the purity of the natural fibres which traditionally were used in the past.

It refers to the oikos, the household, the home. Home, apart from being closely associated with family and the private space, as well as social life, it is an expression of the self and the notion of identity, in combination with culture and social status. The ways we function are linked to the ways in which we make ourselves feel ‘at home’. In other words, our residence is where we live, but our home is how we live. Home is the key location in which a spiritual unity is formed between humans and things.

HESTIA Wall Hanging is an expression of the importance of the term ‘home’ and its implications in humans’ everyday lives, of the ways people conceptualise ‘home’, interact with and within it, and create attachment relations to it.

Handwoven, hand-knotted and hand-brushed. Made with love and sustainability from yarn to cloth to final piece.

In every step of the production a zero-waste philosophy has been followed, aiming to decrease to the minimum yarn waste and unnecessary cuts, carbon footprints, the use of machinery, water and electric energy. The environmental impact has been considered at all the stages of the design, the making process, and also at the packaging of this item.

Hestia (/ˈhɛstiə/; Greek: Ἑστία) is an ancient Greek virgin goddess of the hearth, fireside, architecture, and the right ordering of domesticity, the family, the home.
Hestia's name means "hearth, fireplace, altar”, stemming from the same root as the English verbal form was (PIE*h2wes- "to live, dwell, pass the night"). It thus refers to the oikos, the household, house, or family.
