This series of wall cabinets has developed out of Martyn Simpson’s increasing interest in craft and design, taking as its inspiration the language of brutalist architecture and mid-century modular furniture.

The series consists of several improvised pieces – not drawn or planned. Construction is limited to mortise and tenon, and mitre joints, which are fundamental and direct means of joining two planes. As a body of work, these objects serve as a series of prototypes, or variations on a theme, however, each individual artefact is finished as a stand-alone unique piece of furniture.

Shown here is a new freestanding bookshelf called 'The Donkey'. It is inspired by the 1939 design Penguin Donkey. This contemporary version also fulfils the function of storing Penguin paperbacks. The compartments are the perfect fit for all your paperback books.

Simpson is currently Associate Dean at Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon Colleges of Arts, part of the University of the Arts London. This is his first collection of wall cabinets, utilising his extensive experience gained from his art practice.

All the pieces are handmade in his small Wiltshire workshop, using sustainably sourced European Oak from a local supplier and finished with a natural wax oil.
